"We are gonna do what we can" (quote from Bill Houston). The best thing SLZ can do is stop the cruel, invasive forced breeding of elephants. The message is written in big letters on this particular wall!

The few cases of Herpes in wild elephants have all been traced back to captivity. How sad that the zoo industry needs to mislead (read: LIE) to the public about this. Herpes IS NOT A THREAT to wild elephants and never has been.

There have been a number of confirmed EEHV related elephant calf deaths in three Asian countries in recent years. This includes wild calves and it involves exactly the same hemorrhagic disease and the same species of EEHV. This is not limited to zoos or captivity. Furthermore each USA case has involved a different strain or species of EEHV and it is not transmitted from one case to another or between facilities. All elephants in the wild including those brought to the USA in the past likely carried several different EEHV species with them and are potential silent carriers. Much more scientific research is needed to understand why some strains of the virus cause disease on primary infection, but most do not. Accurate information about EEHV can be obtained from the International Elephant Foundation, which sponsors laboratory and field research to help cure the disease.

A lot of stupid people are claiming these outbreaks do not occur in the wild. They are wrong.

There have been no heres outbreaks in the wild in Asia. These deaths are an epidemic killing young Asian elephants in zoos and circuses. It is a direct result of these industries failing to practice any infection control for the last 14 years. It is time for these industries to accept responsibility for their negligence in the deaths of these innocent elephant calves. Of Asian elephants born in zoos over the last 10 years, 76% of them are now dead, over half from herpes. Shame on SLZ for continuing your deadly, failed breeding program.
